Interns FAQ

What are the benefits of doing an Internship?

Internships are an invaluable way to gain solid work experience and help individuals gain a good understanding of what a particular career path might entail. An intern position can often lead to future employment opportunities more readily either within the organisation where the intern job was available or in other employment situations. The benefits that Interning offers can also further enhance a Resume/C.V and be a good indicating factor that the person is an ambitious, eager candidate willing to do what it takes to ensure they are prepared for their chosen career.

How much does the program cost?

The cost of the programs varies depending on which package you choose. Our programs also offer additional optional services. For information on the prices of the packages and additional services please contact us.

When can I start?

You choose when your work placement starts and finishes. We encourage you to apply as soon as you have decided to do an internship as applications can take up to 8 weeks to process.

Do I need any previous work experience?

No. Relevant experience in your field prior to the placement may help to impress your employer. All you need is enthusiasm and a drive to succeed in your chosen field.

Will I be paid during my placement?

The Internships are unpaid. The objective of an internship is to give you valuable experience in a real-world working environment. In return for acquiring this experience you will contribute to the success of the host company. The Remuneration you receive from an Internship is; the invaluable experience and knowledge that will be prove integral to you when looking for a job in the future.

Intern Options Ireland does offer a limited number of paid placements in the hotel and hospitality industry. For further information on this please contact us.

Do I need to apply for a visa?

This depends entirely on where you are coming from. All countries in the E.U may carry out a work internship without a visa. Citizens of the United States, the EU, Canada, Australia and New Zealand do not need a visa to enter Ireland and take part in internship programs up to twelve weeks (under 90 days) in length.

Those interested in programs longer than twelve weeks must be from an EU country or be eligible for a working holiday visa. If you are not from any of these countries and are interested in an internship in Ireland for longer than 12 weeks, you must apply for a visa.

Intern Options Ireland strongly advises that you always check the visa requirements for your country of origin before booking an international internship. Visit the visa section of the website of the Irish Department of Foreign Affairs for more information. If you are still not sure about your requirements, just contact Intern Options Ireland and one of our team will be able to assist you.

What is an internship credit?
Internship credits are credits which are gained through “work related experience” in a chosen discipline or field of study at the academic level. Often the student may be required to present a thesis, essay or journal that encapsulates their intern experience and clearly demonstrates the skills and experience they have gained from the intern position they have been involved in.

Can I arrange university credit?
Yes, many of our program participants have secured credit from their university or college. Though Intern Options Ireland does not currently have ongoing credit-based programs, we are able to arrange credit for you on a case by case basis. We would work directly with you and your institution to arrange the credits, either issued directly by your school or through a third-party credit issuing institution. In the past students have earned anywhere from 3 credits for a one month program to 13 credits for a semester long program.

Can I extend my placement once I am in Ireland?

Yes. Once you have decided that you wish to stay for a longer period of time, the Intern Options Ireland staff will help you with all of the formalities.

What is the currency in Ireland?

The Euro is the currency in Ireland.

Is there a minimum age?

Participants must be over the age of 18.

Why should I do an internship in Ireland?

Ireland possesses one of the most talented and ambitious work forces in the world. The work ethic and work method of our best and brightest puts Irish companies at the cutting edge of service provision.

Ireland is the one of the first countries to be considered by many multi-nationals when re-locating. As such, a number of the worlds most high profile companies are some of Irelands largest employers.

The emphasis in Irish society on education, achievment and personal success accounts for the high levels of domestic enterprise and Foreign Direct Investment. Ours is also the youngest workforce in Europe with over 36% under the age of 25.

Are flights included in the price?

No, Flights to/from Ireland are not included in the price. However, we can advise you on the best ways and cheapest flights to get to/from the country.

What if I get sick or have an accident while in Ireland?

If you are sick or involved in an accident while in Ireland, our staff will know where the best medical care can be found. You will receive information on this, in the orientation, when you first arrive in Ireland.

Depending on the package you choose, you may also be covered by a comprehensive insurance policy, which includes flying you home and all your medical costs.

How long are the internship placements?

Our internships are available for periods of one to six months. The average length of a placement is twelve weeks.

Are internships just for students?
No, internships are available in many different employment fields. Often applicants are people who may have been out of the workforce for an extended period and now wish to re-enter, or change their career path.

Can an Internship lead to a job offer?

Many of our previous interns have been offered full time positions as a result of their internship. A big part of why a company will offer intern jobs is to assess the possibility of hiring an intern as a full time employee. That is why it is so important to put every effort into the Internship process from preparation to actual performance while in the position.

Will I have free time during my program?
Yes, you will have plenty of free time during your program, particularly in the afternoons, evenings and on the weekends. Intern Options Ireland also organises dinners, drinks, excursions and outings together with other participants on programs with us. We believe the experience is not all about work and therefore we put a lot of focus on our social programs.
